CENTRAL MARKET SURPRISES 2012 FORT WORTH ISD TEACHER OF THE YEAR Cake, it's not just for breakfast anymore! District Teacher of the Year Susan Moore (Elementary) found that out during a surprise visit from Central Market and District representatives. Each of the teachers was honored in their classrooms on April 11, with balloons, cake, and a check for $5000. Chants of, "Ms. Moore" filled the classroom at South Hills Elementary as students helped her celebrate the occasion. Susan Moore, is a Special Education teacher at South Hills Elementary, and was named Fort Worth ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year at the 2012 Teacher of the Year Recognition Dinner on April 5. District Teachers of the Year are selected from among applicants chosen as Campus Teachers of the Year or Chairs for Teaching Excellence. The District Teachers of the Year recipients have the opportunity to be considered for Regional and Texas Teacher of the Year.

BOISE TEACHER NAMED 2009 IDAHO TEACHER OF THE YEAR BOISE Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna announced Wednesday that a Boise elementary school teacher has been honored as the 2009 Idaho Teacher of the Year. Robin Sly of Trail Wind Elementary School in the Boise School District has served as a first-grade teacher for 11 years. As Idaho Teacher of the Year, she will receive about $20000 in cash and donated gifts and represent the state of Idaho as a nominee for the National Teacher of the Year. Robin Sly is an excellent teacher who not only improves student achievement among her own students, but she also lends a hand at the state and local levels to better public education for all students," Superintendent Luna said. Superintendent Luna announced the Idaho Teacher of the Year award in a surprise assembly at Trail Wind Elementary School on Wednesday. He was joined by Boise School District Superintendent Dr. Stan Olson and district board of trustee members AJ Balukoff, Bea Black and Nancy Gregory. "This is quite an honor," Sly said after receiving the award. "I couldn't imagine doing anything else with my life." Teacher Evaluation Reform using technology & Teachscape The Secaucus school district in Hudson County was one of ten districts chosen to pilot the Excellent Educators for New Jersey (EE4NJ) Teacher Evaluation grant. They have been attending all the NJDOE meetings and will provide insight as to the specifics of the proposed changes as well as the technological challenges in rolling out a fleet of tablet devices (iPads) and the necessary infrastructure in order to start using these devices with a web-based evaluation system, such as Teachscape's (fill in the product name). In addition the Fort Lee school district will demonstrate and discuss their experience using Teachscape's evaluation tool and share their expertise and first-hand experiences as your district contemplates what the best course of action is to prepare for the systemic changes in 2013.

Nine New Charges Filed Against Teacher In Child Abuse Case
A Santa Monica middle school teacher arrested last month on suspicion of molesting students pleaded not guilty this morning to nine new charges involving the alleged abuse of three additional girls, all under the age of 14. Thomas Arthur Beltran, 60, was arraigned before Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz on the new charges, which stem from incidents alleged to have occurred between September 2000 and June 2004, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office. Schwartz also amended an existing protective order barring Beltran from contacting alleged victims to include the new individuals. Beltran has now been charged with a total of 23 felony counts involving eight alleged victims and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. During the hearing, Deputy Dist. Atty. Robin Sax Katzenstein said her office is still investigating additional allegations made to police and expects to file additional charges. "We have another four known victims that have not been interviewed" by prosecutors, Katzenstein told the judge this morning. Beltran, who taught English as a second language at Lincoln Middle School for two decades, was arrested May 3. Three days later he pleaded not guilty to 14 felony counts of sexual molestation stemming from the initial allegations. Spotlight on educators in the district. Six campus-nominated educators have been named finalists in the 2010 SBISD Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year competition. The districts Teacher of the Year Committee reviewed nomination materials and made the finalist selections. The districts two Teachers of the Year represent SBISD in regional competition and, if they are successful at that level, will then compete for the highest state honor bestowed on a state teacher Texas Teacher of the Year. District winners also receive a trophy-style Golden Apple award, a $2000 professional growth stipend from the district, $1000 from the Spring Branch Education Foundation, and $250 from First Community Credit Union. Spring Branch has named Teachers of the Year who went on to win regional honors four times since 1990. SBISD educators were also named Texas Teachers of the Year in 1983, 1985, 1989 and in 2000.
